Gibellina, totally destroyed by an earthquake in the January of 1968, has been rebuilt 18 km far from the old village.
Gibellina Nuova is the result of a cultural bet of "humanizing" the territory calling several world famous artists to plan the future.
The unforgettable Ludovico Corrao, who was for many years the mayor of Gibellina, wrote: “Where history had been destroyed, only art could rebuild the layers of a scattered memory; only a strong death-defying cultural project could make the earth capable of bearing fruit and producing flowers ”.
Gibellina Nuova became soon the precious depositary of contemporary art, a great laboratory of artistic experimentation and planning, a veritable open-air museum. This has been achieved thanks to the generous response of artists such as Pietro Consagra, Carla Accardi, Mario Schifano, Arnaldo Pomodoro who renewed the urban space according to an innovative perspective. Their works are placed in the town streets and in the Contemporary Art Museum.
Today Gibellina take an extraordinary artistic value.
An example is the “System of the five Squares” by Franco Purini and Laura Thermes, the “Chiesa Madre” by Ludovico Quaroni, the “Secret Garden” by Francesco Venezia, the “Ingresso al Belice” by Pietro Consagra, and so on…
Gibellina is today a museum “en plein air", a place where art blends with everyday life.
